The Basic Levels of Prophecy

The levels of prophecy can be likened to a pool. The water gets deeper as they go further into the pool. The farthest and deepest end of the pool can be the prophetic level with the greatest intensity and accuracy. Just because a person can prophesy, it does not mean he is called to be a prophet or to the Office of the Prophet. Any divine communication, illumination, and divine inspiration is the work of the Holy Spirit—a prophetic spirit—and is therefore prophetic in nature. Let’s begin with the first level of prophecy.

The “spirit of prophecy” is distinguished from the Book of Revelation. This spirit can be experienced when a preacher suddenly is able to give his message with an extra fire and a fresh anointing. This spirit is also what comes upon you when you feel like the Holy Spirit is telling you to witness to a friend and share the gospel. Suddenly, you can tell you’re sharing exactly what the other person needs to hear. Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your comrades who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” (Revelation 19:10)

The “spirit of prophecy” is what inspires you to tell another believer how much you appreciate them with more than just an expression of gratitude or saying, “Thank you.” This “spirit of prophecy” comes over you while you’re praying and can cause you to “change gears” in terms of the direction of what you’re praying for. You notice you pray with more inspiration—you just feel it in your gut.

The “spirit of prophecy” is also what prompts you to pick up the phone and to encourage a friend in the Lord. The “spirit of prophecy” is simply being inspired to speak for God. Prophecy can be given to you, from God, but sometimes the “spirit of prophecy” is from you to God. Unlike “prophecy” which is a direct word from God—“Thus saith the Lord to you”—the “spirit of prophecy” is more like “Thus saith me with more inspiration from the Spirit than usual.”

OVERCOMING HURDLES IN GROWING YOUR PROPHETIC GIFT

In every area of life, feedback from others is fundamentally needed to help us grow and develop our gifts and skills. There is a saying that goes, “Feedback is the breakfast of champions!” This is also true concerning our spiritual gifts of prophecy and discernment.

At the end of the day, if we don’t know how to improve and sharpen our spiritual gifts—and the manner in which we use them—we will not reach our truest potential. It’s not that we are the source of these gifts, but it is that we’re the stewards of these gifts that we seek to grow them.

Feedback is important because when we recognize and acknowledge our blind spots, we are able to address them. We can never identify our own blind spots. Moreover, we also learn from the wisdom of others who are already ahead of us on the journey.

Our ability to communicate clearly to others what God has spoken to us is sharpened when we receive feedback from elder prophets. Moreover, Godly feedback provides confirmation of our prophetic insight, which benefits us and those to whom we are ministering.

Through feedback, we can assess the degree to which the ministry is helpful. You can also ensure that there is no gap—or misunderstanding—between what you have heard from God (regarding His heart and purposes for a person or for a situation), and what the person has actually received and understood through your prophetic word.

Ministry feedback can come from the following people:

  • A person you share a prophetic insight with;
  • A leader, pastor, or spiritual overseer in the situation you are ministering in;
  • A mentor or fellow team member.

Three Levels of Prophecy Part 3

Ephesians 4 – Prophet and the Ministry

The third level of prophecy involves the Ephesians 4 prophet. A biblical prophet receives a commission from the Lord and the fruit that confirms this calling. Ephesians 4 prophets typically have a national or transnational sphere of work that the Lord has specifically assigned to them.

These prophets release impartation and know how to work with the prophetic gifts. Impartation brings about change. This change is a critical part of the Ephesians 4 prophet’s message. These prophets are designed by God to equip the Church in these Spirit manifestations. When you come around a prophet, you actually experience aspects of the presence of God. There are many different kinds of prophets, but all have a capacity to sense and release God’s presence. Prophets set kings into offices, speak directional words to apostles, and bring impartation.

Impartation pertains to a release that comes into you by the power of the Holy Spirit. The purpose of the impartation is to confirm or to empower God’s call, function, or gift on your life. Impartation is not done by the will of any prophet, but it happens through them as they are carried along by the Spirit.

Three Levels of Prophecy Part 2

1 Corinthians 14 – Specific or Directional Prophecy

We don’t usually have problems with giving general words of encouragement, do we? However, when it comes to specific words of instruction or direction to individuals or the church, this is where some of us really need a clear word from God. This level of prophecy is called the 1 Corinthians level—a gift of prophecy.

All can prophesy, but some are simply given a different anointing, resulting in clarity and accuracy in the prophetic instruction. That usually means that God gave this gift and it produces a word that is beyond blessings or encouragement. God is the source of this

prophetic gift. But we need the character and wisdom to use this directional gift properly. Individuals with the gift of prophecy need lots of training in what to do and not to do, so they know what to do with what the Lord gives them. This practice is particularly important to avoid hurting or offending God’s people.

Do you believe you have the Gift of Prophecy? What made you believe so?

Three Levels of Prophecy

We can understand prophecy as a forward-looking gift. Most prophecies in the Bible are forward-looking. Prophecies in a local church can include word of knowledge and word of wisdom. It can be general or specific. There is usually a keyword that brings breakthrough, repentance, illumination, and the like. Prophecy can seem to be a little repetitive if all you hear in your Church is that God loves you. God does love you, of course, but He has a lot more to say. Actually, there are three levels of prophecy that prophets must be aware of when listening to God’s voice.

1 Corinthians 12 – Simply Prophecy

The first level of prophecy is based on the knowledge that all believers can prophesy. If you are a believer reading this book, you can prophesy because of the grace of God. In 1 Corinthians 12:7, Paul tells you that you have been given the Holy Spirit and you can encourage others through a prophetic word. The Holy Spirit is given for the common good. When we first begin to prophesy, we prophesy out of our maturity—or immaturity. Most of us can give an encouraging word with the help of the Holy Spirit. All believers can prophesy at this level.

Being a Vessel of Anointing

Every believer can be a vessel of God’s anointing. Moreover, every believer can hear from God. It is about being able to recognize the way in which God speaks to you that is important.

In this season in the prophetic ministry, the most important action is to find someone else with a prophetic gift who can mentor you and help you grow in confidence and courage. Having a mentor is critical for any ministry because it gives you a safety net where you can practice without fear of failure. Even if you get it wrong, as long as the person you are giving the “word” to is encouraged and left feeling they have hope, then don’t worry about it. Ask God to lead you, to guide you and to fan into flame the gift that He has given you. Remember the different stages of the gift too and see where you are at the moment. Paul reminded his mentee Timothy to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through laying on of hands (2 Tim. 1:6).

The prophetic is a lovely gift. As a prophet, you would see people connect to God in a personal manner. When people receive an encouraging word, you are a part of it, and you will feel privileged to be used for this purpose.

How does it feel for God to use you by being His prophet?

Pursue Love and Desire Gifts

The Apostle Paul encourages us to pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts. He specifically said that you might prophesy (1 Cor. 14:1). Prophecy is simply about hearing a message from God, then speaking it out. A person may hear something from God and communicate it to the church or to an individual or a group of specific people. Prophecy is about declaring the heart of the Lord.

Man Has a Self-Determined History

Your history is not a mystery. It’s self-determined. You are making your own history

right now, some of you without knowing it. Do you think God brings you into the light of imagination, so you can sit on your hands and make waste of it? No. He has a defined purpose in mind. To imagine that thing is to make it so.

Imagination is the way, the truth, and the life revealed. When you imagine that thing, that is the point at which you make it so. Imagination. There is one thing the Infinite will not do for you, and I want you to grab and hold onto and remember this, the Infinite will not choose for you. It is you who must choose, and who must keep choosing. It is you who must decide what you are going to be, do, and have in life. …choose you this day… (Joshua 24:15).  We are spoon-fed (i.e. spoiled rotten) creatures.  God created the Universe for the humans. God sent Jesus Christ to redeem us from Satan and to keep us from going to hell. God gave us the mind of Christ. He gave us the power of imagination. He gave us the ability to create.  What are we doing? We are whining, grumbling, and complaining how God is not helping us. We are frustrated about the things we don’t have. We compare ourselves with other people and wonder, “Why are they blessed, while I’m not.” With those kinds of thoughts, you shouldn’t be wondering anymore.

If Deuteronomy 8:18 says, God gave you the ability to produce wealth, then it’s up to you whether you want to generate it or not. Most of the time, we want God to STILL take care of that as well.

Man Becomes What He Imagines

“Therefore I say unto you, What things so ever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them (Mark 11:24).”  When you pray, do not feel like “it might happen.” In your heart, be assured that it will. Faith is about being sure for what you hope for. It did not say, “faith is feeling like maybe it will happen.” Being sure means you are 100% certain that God will make it happen.  Faith is about being 100% sure about the outcome. God did not say you need to dictate the process for how He will make it happen. God just wants you to be sure of the outcome. God is saying, “You can be clear about WHAT will happen,” but you need to be able to trust Him to know HOW He will make it happen.

The Test of Imagination

“Let the weak say, I am strong (Joel 3:10b).”

The true test of your imagination is your ability to forgive sin. You cannot forgive sin until you know how to properly utilize your imagination. You can’t forgive someone who does you wrong, unless you have imagination. If you can’t forgive, it means you hold that person who disappointed you as an idol, as someone you believe should have been infallible, and you look to that individual as a source. Imagination will teach you that imagination is the source. Everything in your life is the work of your awakened imagination. Life has been waiting for you to imagine that you are. Imagine that you are, and you shall be. The grace of the Lord is sufficient for you, His power is made perfect in your weakness (2 Cor. 12:9). How can you claim this verse to manifest in your life today? What area in your life do you need grace for? What expenses do you need God to cover? What desires do you have that you want the Lord to give? Is there a house you’re praying for? Is there a car you are asking God for?

The Lord is saying, “His grace is sufficient.” It means it is enough. It is enough to cover

everything you need right now. You don’t have to worry. You just have to rest in the grace of the

Lord.

The Definite With the Infinite

By the Infinite, we mean the Unlimited God. You have to be definite with the Infinite.

Until you are definite with the Infinite, you do not define the Infinite in you. God sent you to earth so you can be His dream come true. Until you become definite with the Infinite, the dream will be a nightmare. You have to define and declare the good that you want before you can get it.

It is up to you to choose, and to define exactly what the Infinite will be, do, and have through you. Your position before the Lord was defined when Jesus died on the cross. No longer do you need a High Priest to offer your requests before God for you, like the Israelites did. Jesus made a way for us to come directly to the Infinite and Unlimited God, without dying. It is your special privilege as a Christian to have access to God Almighty. It is Jesus-won for you and sacrificed for you.

You have the power to be bold with your prayers and to be specific in what you want.

Jesus said, “It’s “yes” and “amen” if you ask in His name. What are you waiting for?

What do you want to ask the Lord for? It is already a “yes” and an “Amen.”

Behold God in You

It’s time for you to behold God in you. The word goes forth to make the answer appear,

and the answer is within you. If you want to know and see the answer, you have to behold it. You have to be aware of the answer. You have to speak the answer. You have to believe in the answer. When you do this, the answer will unfold. Jesus said, “I am the truth.” He said, “I am the way.” He said, “I am the life.” How much clearer do we need him to get?

When you understand what Jesus wants to tell you, you are able to use the power of

Christ’s nature, Christ’ words, and Christ’s promises. The power of the cross ultimately covers  everything that is wrong in this world. Don’t you think that includes lack and poverty? If it does, then why are you still talking about it?
